LA tattoo artists don’t realize how valuable their skills are—until they leave the city.

Coming from LA, where the tattoo game is stacked with talent, it’s easy to feel like just another artist. But once you take that same skill set to cities where black and gray or fine lettering isn’t as common, you realize just how sought-after it is.

Every time I tattoo in places like Portland or Minnesota, I see firsthand how much people appreciate LA-style black and gray. I’ve been booked solid just by offering what’s rare in these cities.

Traveling allows you to plant seeds—introducing styles that aren’t easily found there. That demand keeps you busy, builds your name in multiple cities, and expands your client base.

“I decided to offer Paul, the front desk guy at my apartment, a free tattoo after months of him looking out for me without even knowing what I do for a living. When I finally told him I’m a tattoo artist, I thought it would be a cool way to thank him and get more people in the building to check out my work. Paul took a few months to accept the offer because he couldn’t decide on a design and also struggled to get a day off. But after his girlfriend got tattooed, he finally pulled the trigger! I did some freehand custom script lettering for him with a design that says “raised on rice”something he grew up eating. It felt good gifting him that tattoo as he always takes care of me when I need help , and now he’s proudly showing it off to everyone in the building. Just Finished this black and gray Aztec-inspired forearm piece for my client at @artifactstattoos !This one was a fun challenge—an Aztec princess near the elbow, wearing a medallion, leading down to Aztec ruins with a sacrifice scene near the wrist. The entire piece was custom-designed, based on my client’s ideas, and came together over 2-3 sessions

I loved working with the ideas my client brought to me—being able to incorporate Mexican culture into this piece made it both fun and unique to put together. I appreciate my clients for trusting me with their vision. I love working on black and gray compositions especially when bringing cultural and historical themes to life.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to paint at @werol

Yesterday I had the opportunity to paint at @werollup.playavista in Marina Del Rey, working on one of the 8 large panels inside their dispensary. I completed a 4x10 ft Pufco Peak piece using all montana spray paint Instead of using a projector, I used the doodle grid method—a technique where you cover the surface in random doodles, take a picture, overlay your reference image with slight transparency, and use the doodles as guides for accurate placement. It’s a more organic way to scale artwork, and I enjoyed the process

I also painted the exact same @puffco Peak that @puffcon_la gifted me. Once I made the connection, I knew I had to recreate the one I personally own

Finally finalized my homies arms yesterday by completing the “Bonnie “ piece . The Darlene was done a a few months back . I thank him for allowing me to do that and proud how they came out ..

freehanding two that match—while adjusting for different arm positions and spellings—is difficult . On one arm, the capital letter sits near the elbow; on the other, it’s closer to the wrist. Keeping the flow consistent while making each fit naturally was a real test of skill, and I’m hyped on how they turned out.
